MTNL TriBand and IPTV via Linksys WRT54G – updated with Screenshots
Posted by Irus on December 23, 2007
How to avoid paying for getting MTNL Broadband on your 3rd party Wireless router after installation of MTNL IPTV.
EQUIPMENT
1. IBM Laptop T42 Wifi equipped
2. Linksys WRT54G
3. MTNL TKD 4 port wired router
5. HP PSC printer to be configured
AIM
to get wifi access to internet and printer on the laptop and keep the iptv running as well on the TV without renting the wifi mtnl modem.
PREREQUISITE/CHECK BEFORE STARTING
Internet access is up via wired ethernet on the laptop by directly connecting MTNL TKD to the laptop. Keep TKD, WRT and Printer switched off. Also all LAN cables are unplugged.
SETUP – your settings should be exactly like below. Not more not less.
1. clear TCP/IP settings from control panel-network connections-wireless and wired lan cards. Input following settings in the Wireless lan card
2. Turn on the printer first (make sure it is set to obtain IP address automatically from printer network settings in the printer itself.)
3. Turn on TKD and reset it. Connect Printer with TKD wired router via ethernet cable in any 1 of the 4 ports.
4. Turn on WRT54G and reset it.
5. Access WRT54G settings by typing 198.168.1.1 in internet explorer.
6. Connect TKD with WRT via ethernet cable from any LAN port of TKD to Internet port.
If you get “Connected” like in the screen shot below it means all your settings have been done correctly.
After the settings ensure that your Wireless connection is secure by following the below two Screen shots.
If there are many Wifi networks in your area it is a good idea to make your connection invisible by disabling SSID broadcast.
If you have disabled SSID ensure that you tick the option of “Connect even if…” in the below screen shot on your computer.
Your Settings in MTNL Modem should use the Bridge mode as given below. No need to enter DNS/Username/Password in the Modem.
That is it! enjoy! Post if you have any problems, will try to address depending on time.

Cheers!

iptv consumes 2mbps, broadband 2mbps, xDSL line capacity is 16 mbps and wifi has a capacity of 56 mbps. so everything is well within limits of the wifi router.
even if one uses iptv and broadband simultaneously i.e. 4 mbps u still have 12 mbps further capacity free on xDSL phone line and 52 mbps free capacity on wifi.
thats why there is no speed kill.
the printer can be plugged in any of the 2 free ports LAN ports of TKD or 3 free ports of WRT54G. Since both are DHCP servers, it will work without problems!

u could however try connecting the printer to ur lynksys.
As iptv consumes a lot of bandwidth there are bound to be limitations.
please tell me what kind of speed kill do u suffer while surfing/dloading while accessing both the broadband net and the iptv at the same time ?
Prax said
plus wi fi access limits the connection speed further

yes Irus
printer in the wrt wd be more correct to me though
as u said it can be connected to both
technically correct but do devices ever work at max capacity ever ?
n 16mb…? does mtnl give that kind of bandwith?
they cap non iptv at 2 mbps and iptv connectns at 4.5mbps
plus sometimes they cap it at 256 kbps during the day
worse mtnls dns is kinda terrible somethimes
plus wireless speed also depends upon the distance from the wrt box
all in all i think its mtnl dns that gives probs
try using open dns ips

Hi does this configuration still work or have the mtnl guys been clued in to the deal. I am writing in from mumbai & I’m about to activate mtnl adsl broadband. Question…
If I activate a normal broadband plan like say plan 199 which gives 400MB free usage, does it mean that the ‘other usage’ which is free runs independently or is it IMPORTANT that I activate ONLY Iptv and no broadband plans prior to this arrangement you have described. Please let me know.
Irus said
iptv needs some broadband plan activated else it won’t work. but the bandwidth usage by iptv won’t get deducted from 400mb.
my hardware setup has changed now so can’t tell you exactly but there is no reason why this should not be working. do let me know if there are any issues.

thanks Irus.
have bought the linksys model you have mentioned. now just waiting for the iptv fellows to come & install the service & then I can follow your guide. I just hope it works. Is the mtnl tkd a standard dlink one? Will keep u updated. Will you be checking this page often or should i email you on any particular address? Do let me know & thanks again.

Hi Everyone,
I’m MTNL broadband user from West Delhi. I guess MTNL is the worst and only broadband ISP in my locality. I’ve been using this service for last 1 year now. In the beginning, I used to get the downoad speed of around 30KBPS which was very good for me as i switched over from Local LAN ISP’s 64K plan. but now, my download speed id reduced to around 25KBPS which is a kinda sick thing. I’ve tried complaining a lot of times, but they do not take any action on it. I’m using only broadband for my PC via TDK 4 port ethernet router. Recently I bought a new Netgear ADSL router but nothing has changed. I download around 95 MB files from rapidshare.com and the it takes around 1hr and 20mins to download and just would like to mention that my configuration uses a Dynamic IP. Please suggest any better way out like if i opt for IPTV, as it needs more bandwidth, will that be helpful and will i be able to get better speed…
